I had the opportunity to complete an internship with the Southern Standard, our local newspaper in McMinnville, Tennessee. During my time there, I worked on several assignments as both a writer and photographer. Being part of a small, close-knit newsroom was an incredible experience. It was in that environment that my passion for photography truly took off.

The internship gave me a deeper understanding of the ins and outs of journalism from storytelling and deadlines to the responsibility that comes with documenting real people and real events. Coming straight out of high school, the opportunity felt both exciting and humbling. I was fortunate to be surrounded by mentors who supported and encouraged me, which made a lasting impact on my confidence and growth.

Photography has played an important role in my life. During difficult seasons marked by depression and anxiety, picking up a camera gave me purpose and clarity. It became both a creative outlet and a source of stability, and I will always be grateful for that.

One of the pieces I wrote during my internship covered the local Rotary Club, and seeing my work come off the press for the first time was incredibly rewarding. Holding that freshly printed page reminded me why I love this field the ability to tell meaningful stories and preserve moments that matter.

I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to intern at such a respected publication, and the experience continues to shape the way I approach journalism and photography today.
